The river channel typically contains a single stream of water, but some rivers flow as several interconnecting streams of water, producing a braided river. A braided channel is the name given to a single stream in a braided river network.

A braided river (or braided channel) is one of a number of channel types and has a channel that consists of a network of small channels separated by small and often temporary islands called braid bars or, in British usage, aits or eyots. Braided streams occur in rivers with high slope and/or large sediment load. They typically carry fairly coarse-grained sediment down a fairly steep gradient. Additionally, the water discharge tends to be highly variable.
